    New Template!!!!

Finally, I sat down and did a few things which I wanted to do for a very long time.
    1. Backup my stuff. There should be a back-up regime one should follow every week for your work.
    2. Upload my web graphics I'm using in my other blog
    3. Upload my blog's new template!!!
*PHEW*!! It sure is hard work being a techie. Well, at least I can be sure my other blog "Chasing Tails" is up and running. Some minor tweaks and enhancements are coming up.

Friends are telling me that I love to blog and some are asking me why I'm posting so much rubbish on the web. Well, I want to share some of the stuff going on and especially stories on EV are just too funny not to share it out. LOL!!! ^___^

Anyway, its a Friday and I don't feel like working...

    Weird "Trackbacking"

Just discovered this bug while trying to start an entry for my blog this week...

Anyway, I discovered that people have started to "spam" my trackback link. I thought it was weird because I never had anyone trackback to my blog ever since I started it last year.

After going though the administrative page, I discovered that the links were from search engines, more like "trackback spamming engines" which just searches the web for certain keywords and then, when it finds one, just links back to your site. Hmmmm... When the user clicks on the link, it just brings them to a search site.

Not so bad, but I can imagine if my site were to link back to some pr0n site, its not going to look very good.

So, I've disabled trackbacking and hopefully, this would stop.

BTW, Happy Labour Day, although, there's only 30 minutes left... -____-"

    Another friend on blogosphere!!

I just got some wonderful news about one new friend joining the blogosphere. :)

Good to know that there is another site I can add to my list of blogs that I read/link to.

Linda, hope you have a good time blogging. Writing is good for the soul. Besides that, it builds up your creativity as well. ;)

    Enjoy!!!

Microsoft flaw and your notebook battery...

If you ever wondered why your brand new Intel-Centrino based notebook's battery drained so quickly, chances are you have had,
    1. Defective battery
    2. Defective motherboard OR
    3. this issue

Anyway, the article said that certain USB 2.0 devices caused this issue. So, is this the price we pay for using high-speed devices?

Its an issue with effective code running efficiently on limited hardware resources. As you remember, heat emission is our biggest enemy in our electrical devices. So, if you write efficient code that doesn't use a lot of O/S resources, which uses less hardware resource which emits less heat, you'll have longer battery life -- that is, if your device is a notebook.

Anyway, there was this "Energy Rating" system for monitors and I'd suppose because of this, Microsoft Windows XP (SP2) is not energy efficient?

    Internet Cafe @ KLCC

Am writing my blog entry while at the Internet Cafe @ KLCC. Was stranded there because of my trip to Aquaria KLCC. Quite fun being there. I took loads of photos and will upload them once I get home.. If ever...

Anyway, the place is comfy, well-lit. It feels more like a proper Business Centre than an Internet Cafe.

**My memories of Internet Cafe involves loud music, smoke and dark, dark area... Sometimes, you wonder if rats are walking under your feet..**

I managed to check on some office mail and also chat with some colleagues to see if there were any juicy happenings.  So far.... Nothing much is going around in the office, since its the end of the year and loads of people are on vacation.

I'm kind of worried as I am expecting some stuff from some other colleagues and I've not heard from them yet. Yes, yes.. "No news is good news" but me, being the hyperactive paranoid workaholic don't like this silence.

Oh well, for me, being a shopper/half-KL tourist feel glad that there is such a service in a big shopping mall. Its very attractive for tourists and business people travelling to this part of KL.

Oh oh... Some useless info.. Its RM8 per hour (non-exec) and additional RM2 for each 15mins after.  Pricey.. But you pay for the comfy environment...

I tried to look for some info, but couldn't find any..  They should update their website-la (Suria KLCC)... -___-"

Sony DRM Rootkit : The Root of All Evil?

This is an interesting piece of news... Microsoft to Zap Sony DRM 'Rootkit'...

There has been a lot of talk lately about Sony's attempt to implement some DRM protection on its music products, i.e. CDs and etc, since most PCs and other "smart" hardware are able to rip the content off the CD/DVD using certain softwares.

Anyway, I don't blame Sony or other companies doing this as piracy is rampant now. But the approach is kind of dumb, right? Instead of solving the problem they introduced more bugs and problems. Did they actually do the proper research to get this implemented correctly?

Its funny that when we put the CD in and we get a "virus" courtesy from your favourite large, profiteering, bloodsucking organization. Hehe, this is probably not the first snafu of some large corporation. There has been plenty of goof-ups from certain organization, from putting wrong software, sending 1000 CDs to some poor guy (remember AOL?) and the worse, installing a virus with the software on the CD.

Anyway, since we're all human and bound to make mistakes, I've learnt not the trust any software I get. Even from the manufacturers. You'll never know if they install a Trojan to control your machine. So, what do we do? Get CD, scan with an antivirus scan (hopefully, that scanner is ok) and do whatever you want with it.

I was thinking of getting some music CDs lately and I think some of it were under the Sony label. Now, I've got to think twice about getting it. I'd guess, it should affect my Sony CD player... LOL!!!...

    My new baby!!

My new baby is finally a week old...

    I love it to bits!!

I have been waiting for it anxiously for the last 2 years. Most of the time, pondering, looking and prodding different models and types before coming up with my ideal specifications of what to get. I've been looking over my bank a/c several times, wondering if I could just afford it.

Anyway, its finally here! Its a week old. I've scrubbed it clean, put in all the good stuff and now, its running like a dream. If you're wondering what the heck I'm talking about, have a look at the picture below...

If you're wondering about the specs, here is the summary..

    Hardware
    CPU: Intel Centrino (M) 2GHz
    HDD: 100GB
    Graphics: 128MB ATI Radeon X300
    WiFi: Intel PRO/Wireless 802.11b/g
    NIC: Broadcom 440x 10/100
    Media: DVD ReWriter

    Software (or Sotware... haha)
O/S: Windows XP Professional SP2 (Its original... No.. I didn't use pirate copy)

So, what am I using this beautiful machine for? Well, for starters, I'm catching up on my gaming hobby, i.e. play Half-Life 2 (I'm a year late!!) and BFME (Battle for Middle Earth).

I still haven't figured out what exactly I want to do with it. Most likely probably will use it for my programming experiments/mini projects which I want to use to pick up certain skills and testing open source software out. I'm excited about playing with MySQL 5.0 as it just came out.

I am such a geek... But I'm a happy geek... Haha...

    Happy B'day to... E-mail!!!

Found a very interesting post about e-mail and how it first got started 34yrs ago...

Its cool to think that something like e-mail, which we literally take for granted is THAT old. In terms of Internet time, this little piece of technology is really ancient... To think then that this was cutting edge technology during those times. What next for e-mail?

Well, VOIP is pretty big these days and I can say that its technology had its roots from the humble little e-mail...

To think that e-mail and mail servers are so common that some small kids can even setup their own mail servers in a flash...

Oh well, what's the point in all this, even though computers and Internet are relatively "new" technology, these little pieces were possible because of earlier inventions... ;)

    Viva La E-mail!!!

    Splogger? Or SplogSpot?

Ah... At long last, my worse fears have been realized. The sp@mmers have decided to spawn massive "splogs"... Check this story out...

I thought something was amiss when I was browsing the main page at Blogspot.com and found that most of the pages updated (through a little scroll window) contained XXX keywords.

Anyway, this was confirmed when some funny person just entered a post on my other blog once I decided to have it listed as public on Blogspot.com. It turned out to be some pr0n thing... I took my blog off the public list almost immediately.

*sigh*.... So, what's next? Put in sp@m filters on blogs like what we have for e-mails now??

Office 12 to add PDF format...

Ahhh.... Finally, The great Microsoft has decided to right a "wrong" by enabling support for PDF...

No big news as the other big productivity suite, OpenOffice has enabled native support for publishing PDF files since version 1.0.

Hmmm... One has to ask why Microsoft did not want to support PDF in the first place? Well, IMHO, they wanted to make a push for their own formats, i.e. RTF, HTML, XML and try to convince people that to share documents, this was the way to go. I would suspect that they expected to take over the entire world with their Windoze O/S by now. Lest, they expected people to adopt their Office XML format. However, with the advent of "cross-platform support", and popularity of the PDF format (thanks to Adobe for distributing free PDF Readers and countless others for providing free, opensource PDF Printers), one cannot afford not putting this format in.

PDF offered so many features that the existing Office formats could not, mainly in providing digital copyrighting protection and water-marking. M$ did provide a "read-only" format and also put in place password-protection to prevent this, but lets face it, we can crack these protective measures easily.

Being a cross-platform O/S user, I would have to admit that the best way to share docs was to use PDF especially when you've got colleagues who are using a *nix desktop and asking them to open up a Word doc on OpenOffice or StarOffice (back when StarOffice was free...) was a nightmare...

Anyway, in Brian Jones' blog, the decision to incorporate native PDF support came as "Currently, on our OfficeOnline site, we are seeing over 30,000 searches per week for PDF support. That makes a pretty easy decision :-) " Kudos to Microsoft for FINALLY LISTENING TO WHAT 80% OF MICROSOFT OFFICE CUSTOMERS OUT THERE WANTS!!

    My Blog is back!!

    Wahahahaha...

My blog is back online!! I had so much trouble trying to sign on to Passport last night and after some time, decided to give up and hit the hay.

Anyway, its Wednesday and that means.... Movie Wednesday!! Most tickets are 1/2 price off. Great for movie buffs and people wanting to save a ringgit or two to catch the latest movies... Hopefully, traffic will not be so bad tonight.

Hmmmmm.... Ran out of ideas.. Probably should shut up for now... kekeekkee...
