Kingdom Hearts II

This post is looooonnnnggg overdue...

Sis's BF: Hey, heard that you got a PS2.
Me: Yea, that's right. Don't play much with it these days. Busy with work...
Sis's BF: So, what kind of games you play?
Me: Hmmm.. All sorts, FPS, some Action RPG, Sports.. Mainly We Love Katamari..
Sis's BF: You play Final Fantasy? Kingdom Hearts?
Me: Hmmm.. Not yet, no time to play those.
Sis's BF: Oh! You should really try it out...

Anyway, turns out that my sis' bf is a big PS2 fan and that he plans to get one someday. He used to have one, but somehow it got lost.

Some weeks later @ home...

Sis: Eh!! Can you bring out the PS2?
Me: Sure... You guys want to play?
Sis's BF: Yeah! I just downloaded a copy of Kingdom Hearts II!
NOTE: I do not condone buying pirated stuff... Though... *ahem*...
Me: Wow! Cool!!
Sis's BF: So, this is your copy... So, let's try it out!
Me: **saliva dripping**

We booted up the game and we saw the intro, with some cut-scenes from the previous Kingdom Hearts. The graphics looked really good compared to the last one. I didn't get to play the first installment but I saw some of the video on Kingdom Hearts before.

So, graphics-wise, this latest game is good. However, because of all the cut-scenes and fantastic graphics, sometimes, you'll have to endure some pretty long load times, even when during the play of the cut-scene! It looks like your PS2 has "hung" but in fact, you can see the characters blinking or making some small gesture, indicating some system loading.

Well, Kingdom Hearts II is more RPG-like this time around and as usual, you get to choose which abilities and magic spells you want to improve for your character as well as our usual sidekicks, Donald and Goofy. Of course, we get to have different "temporary" characters to the game as well, such as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Carribean as well as cute and fuzzy Pooh Bear. Being a Square-Enix+Disney combiation, you'll see your fair share of Square-Enix characters like Squall Leonhart and from Final Fantasy VIII.

The game starts off in Twillight Town and so, the town looks like it has a slight twinge of yellow/gold wherever you go. You get to play as Roxas who is hanging out with his group of friends during summer vacation. There are mini quests such as collecting enough $$$ to get on a train to go to the beach. However, they are interrupted by mysterious people and this is where a lot of cutscenes come in, some of which from the previous Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.

Anyway, we were wondering if we were ever going to play as Sora again as we played for about 4hrs before finally reaching the game intro... proper!! So, we got to play an intro before going into the real game! Nice idea... The sad part is, just when you start to get attached to Roxas, Sora is awakened and so, we get to play as Sora again. So, Sora gets his key-blade, even updates his "fashion" as well as reunited with his pals, Donald and Goofy. The Gummi ship returns and so, we get to travel between the worlds. However, because of the latest mysterious incidents which first affected Roxas, these links have been lost and so, we have to reopen them again.

So far, we've played until the Pirates of the Carribean world and it is tiring. If not for the Kingdom Hearts II guide which my sis's bf has, we'll probably be circling around for a while before we get to play the good stuff.

In all, Kingdom Hearts II has a really nice storyline, it picks up where it left off from the last two installments, with updated graphics and gameplay, it is a joy to play and watch as a spectator. However, the beginning of this new installment can be a bit slow, you'll just have to be a little patient first, because you'll be treated to a very good intro...

Go out and get this one! It's a keeper! Full review here @ Gamespot.com

Hitam

Wah, never before have I waited so long for a game - besides drooling over LOTR:ROTK... Kekeke...

Anyway, I managed to get hold of Hitam (Black) for the PS2 last night at my usual place. Was so happy to see it on sale. ** Rubbing hands with glee **

After much anticipation and visiting EA's site countless times and watching countless gameplay movies on Gamespot, I managed to get my grubby little hands on it. However, it been a work-night (Thurs), I figured that I couldn't spend much time with this new "baby" of mine. Besides, I was with EV who happened to got stranded in KL.

I got pretty excited when I got home as I heard so much about the game, from the graphics to the environment effects because it had a lot of explosions and you can interact a lot more with the surroundings.

So, I popped the DVD in and started to play. I noticed a first thing, it didn't have too much of an introduction, which kind of bummed me out because the introduction was so cliche and didn't offer anything different from some of the FPS out there. Well, I started out in the first mission and found that it got straight into the game after some guy started to talk about Black in "flashback" mode. Oh well, the weirdest part was that even though at easy level, I had already blasted out a door and just a few yards away, was the enemy AI who didn't even flinch. The guy was standing next to a car, which if you hit it, will explode into a huge fireball. Aha... The adrenaline gets pumping.

Anyway, after finding some grenades, the usual health pack and some AK47 Assault Ammo, you can grab the AK47 assault rifle from the guy you just blew the bejezzzzuuss out of. HOWEVER, you have to EXCHANGE your shotgun for the AK47. ** WHAT???!!! **

Hmmm, well, the first objective was for you to meet up with your team mates called the Black Cell (sounds like some telolist group). You meet up with them very easily (unlike other games like P:SB, where you have to go for miles and miles before you see the other team), which irked me a little. Right off the back, you'll be pumping lead into the baddies and you'll notice that the guns look so nice and real. The sound, well, its not as good as BF2 but its nice enough. The recoil factor when you squeeze the trigger isn't a lot which is weird, unlike games in BF2, where shooting a sniper rifle causes you to recoil a bit and you have to reposition your sights in order to get the next shot.

The AI is a bit weird. You would think that you spray some bullets horizontally across some windows you would hit all the baddies but they still stay standing..... -_-

Anyway, gameplay wise, kind of action packed and fun from the get-go. However, you will tend to bore quickly because the gameplay tends to be a little shallow when it comes to fighting the baddies. The environment is "blastable", where if you hit anything, chances are, it'll shatter, explode or just leave some bullethole marks on the walls. This means, graphics-wise, Hitam looks pretty good and realistic. They've employed some of the effects in HL2, where you can see some realistic lighting effects based on where the sun is over your environment.

Sad to say, this game is a little shallow for my taste. Its fun and I'll play it because I like the action but chances are, I think I might fall asleep playing this game.

The guns look good but you don't get a chance to keep it in your arsenal as you move along the game. The variety of guns are kind of limited, unlike what we see in BF2. The missions (what missions?? Everything is in "flashback", remember?) are just the same, going in, killing the baddies and getting out. The one thing I do like is the look of the game as it looks like you're in a real FPS, where you don't have a lot of HUD to clutter your view.

This game had a lot of potential and loads of people looked forward to it, but it turned out to be kind of mediocre. Its a good game to pick up and play but not as deep as BF2. So, if you want mindless shooting, pick this game up. If you want something more realistic, I think going for games like BF2 would be a lot better.

Battlefield 2 : Modern Combat (PS2)

Ahhh... The smell of war on a lovely morning...

I just picked up Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for my PS2. Lovely game, though lacking in some parts from its brother, the PC version.

Anyway, I jumped into battle without knowning much about the controls of the game and found it to be very much like an arcade FPS. I love the hot-swapping feature which allowed me to jump to another fellow team member's body when they're in a sticky situation. You'll keep hearing the same remarks like "We can't move!! We're pinned down!!" or "We need backup!! Where is it??!!!". When things get pretty hot, you'll hear that awful familiar WW2 game cry "MEEeEEDDDDIIICC!!!"...

All in all, the reason why I picked this up was because after hearing so much about BF2 (PC version) from my colleagues, I thought I would pick this up for my PS2 version before embarking on the PC one. I love the fact that you can command any vehicle (which BF pioneered back in BF 1942) while playing the game. Sad to say that I've got a lot more games on the PC waiting for me to play/complete, like Quake 4, Halo2 , HL2 and Doom III.

In conclusion, I like this game because its so easy to get into. However, I would like the missions to be a lot longer for the single-player option. Games like MoH which boasts long missions would be great for BF2:Modern Combat.

I'm still waiting for Black and am really anxious for it to be released. From Gamespot's website, it should be released on the last week of Feb, 2006.

Anyway, I'm not an expert gamer and so, here's the review for BF2:Moden Combat.
